Therapeutic moisturizers are cream, gel, liquid or ointment preparations used to soothe, soften and moisturize the skin. They should be applied after cleansing with a gentle agent and when the skin is dry. Ingredients vary by manufacturers’ formulation but generally contain water, humectants, emollients and vitamins. May also include an antimicrobial ingredient. Therapeutic moisturizers are the second step in the process of cleansing, moisturizing and protecting the genital and rectal areas for the prevention of skin breakdown.
